1.  Computational Biology at Smaller Institutions

Posted 08-15-2017 17:41

As a previous discussion thread mentioned, there was a Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) session at ISMB 2017 with a number of breakout discussion groups about computational biology education. Our group focused on the needs and challenges of teaching computational biology at smaller institutions that are largely undergraduate focused. In particular, we identified the following common challenges.

  1. Finding or building a community when you are the only researcher (or one of just a few) at your institution working in computational biology.
  2. How to go about starting a new program, especially one with different interdisciplinary focus at a small institution.
  3. How to determine what should go into a computational biology class at a small institution.

In response to this conversation we have created a discussion group that you can join by visiting the link below. Please join if you are interested in similar topics or want to meet others that teach computational biology at smaller institutions. Other comments or suggests are welcome either on that discussion forum or as responses to this post.  To facilitate planning please respond by October 1, 2017.!forum/cobe-small-institution-group
